Luxury vinyl plank: wear layers and what the numbers mean
Wear layer ranges and what they typically handle
Common residential and light-commercial wear layers fall into a few bands.
Layers around 6 to 8 mils suit light traffic: bedrooms, guest rooms, and other spaces with limited foot traffic and little grit. They can still scuff or dull sooner if sand and pets are common.
About 12 mils is a frequent residential specification for living areas, halls, and kitchens with normal household use. It is not a guarantee of long life, but it is a clear step up from the thinnest films for everyday abrasion.
Around 20 mils and thicker aligns with heavier residential traffic and many commercial applications. ASTM F1700, the specification for solid vinyl floor tile, calls for a minimum wear layer of 0.020 in (0.50 mm)—20 mils—for commercial use of that product class. That standard is for solid vinyl tile construction; many click-lock products are specified under other documents (including ASTM F3261 for rigid-core products), but 20 mil remains a practical benchmark when traffic is high.
Thicker is not always better in isolation. UV coatings, aluminum oxide or similar surface treatments, and how well grit is controlled matter as much as raw mil count. A clean floor with a modest wear layer can outlast a thick layer ground daily with sand from outdoors.
Rigid core versus flexible construction
Flexible luxury vinyl typically uses a more pliable PVC-based core. It can conform better to slight subfloor variation, feels softer underfoot, and is common in glue-down and some older floating formats.
Rigid-core products use a stiff middle layer. Two common types are stone plastic composite (SPC), dense and firm, and wood plastic composite (WPC), still rigid but usually slightly softer underfoot than SPC. Rigidity improves dimensional stability and resistance to point-load indentation compared with soft flexible constructions. It does not replace a flat, sound subfloor. Most manufacturers require flatness on the order of 3/16 in in 10 ft or 1/8 in in 6 ft; stiffer planks can stress click joints if the substrate flexes or waves beyond those limits. On wood framing, excessive joist deflection is a separate issue from flatness; installers typically follow the product instructions and common floor-structure limits rather than relying on the plank alone to hide bounce.
Waterproof versus water-resistant claims
Vinyl polymer itself does not absorb water the way unfinished wood does. “Waterproof” on a rigid-core floating floor usually means the core will not swell if liquid sits on the surface for a period of time. It does not mean water cannot pass through joints, edges, or damaged boards, or that the underlayment and subfloor below are immune. Standing water at perimeters, poorly sealed transitions, and wet crawl spaces can still damage the assembly under the floor.
“Water-resistant” is a looser marketing term. It often appears on flexible products or installations where adhesives, seams, or porous underlayers can be affected by prolonged moisture. For decision-making, read the warranty’s water language: duration of exposure allowed, whether the claim covers the core only, and exclusions for flooding or standing water. The material chemistry and installation method matter more than the adjective on the box.
Specs that actually relate to longevity
Wear layer thickness is the primary number tied to surface life under abrasion. ASTM F1700’s commercial 20 mil minimum is a useful reference point when traffic is heavy. Overall thickness and core type relate more to indentation, stability, and underfoot feel than to how fast the print wears through.
Beyond those, useful indicators include: a clear traffic rating or commercial/residential classification on the data sheet; locking-system and dimensional-stability claims backed by a rigid-core standard such as ASTM F3261 where applicable; and installation limits for flatness and moisture. Warranty length alone is a weak predictor—terms often exclude grit, pets, and improper subfloor prep.
In practice, match wear layer to real traffic, choose core type for the subfloor and room conditions you have, and treat waterproof labeling as a description of the plank body, not of the entire finished floor system.
